What is Rubber and How to Obtain it

Rubber is a flexible substance made from the sap (latex) of some tropical plants or oil and natural gas. Natural rubber produced from the sap of trees is called natural rubber, and synthetic rubber produced from petroleum products. Both types are versatile substances. Items made of rubber are often called tires.

The rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis), whose homeland is South America, is mostly grown in Brazil, Ceylon, Mexico, Java Island, Central and East Africa. For hundreds of years, natural rubber has been obtained by using various treatments, after scratching the rubber tree, collecting the sap in the milk flowing, leaving this water to dry and harden. Throughout the 20th century, advances in chemistry allowed the artificial version to be made using the rubber in the oil. Two thirds of the 18 million tons of rubber produced annually are synthetic.
